User research
Talking to the people who use the thing. A handful of proper conversations usually beats a month of internal debate.
Structure and naming
What goes where, and what it's called. Most navigation problems are naming problems in disguise.
Wireframes
Structure first, without colour or imagery to distract from whether it actually works.
Usability testing
We give people a task and watch them try. Uncomfortable, and the fastest way to find what's broken.
Interface design
Hierarchy, spacing, states and components applied consistently, so people learn the interface once.
Accessibility
Contrast, focus states, keyboard routes and screen reader labels, built in from the start.
